Name the unit before anything else

Each type sends the technician to different parts:

  • Built-in direct-vent unit. A sealed box behind glass, with its own vent through the wall or roof.
  • Insert in a masonry fireplace. A gas unit slid into an old wood firebox, with a liner run up the chimney. One Ottawa firm’s guide calls B-vent inserts the cheaper type that draws room air and uses the chimney’s natural draft.
  • Freestanding gas stove on a hearth pad, with its own pipe.

Add the fuel, the ignition (a pilot that burns all the time, or one that lights on demand) and the control: switch, thermostat or remote. The rating plate says more than any description.

What the yearly visit covers

Enbridge Gas advises an annual service visit from a TSSA-registered contractor for a gas fireplace. One Ottawa firm lists what its $179–$329 yearly service includes: burner and pilot cleaning, a gas pressure test, a look at the venting and combustion air, glass cleaning, resetting the logs, a safety device test, a vacuum of the firebox and a written condition report.

Use that list to compare offers; a glass-only cleaning checks less. A furnace service has its own scope; both can go on one visit.

Faults people report, and what they tend to cost

A pilot that will not stay lit, or a pilot that burns while the main flame stays off, usually sends the technician to the thermocouple, thermopile or ignition parts; that is the low end of the price list on this page. A loud fan or a grille that blows cool air points to the blower. A gas valve sits higher, and cracked firebox panels higher again. HomeStars puts the Ottawa hourly rate at $75–$150.

Mention whether the remote has been tried with fresh batteries. Sooty or foggy glass and yellow, lazy flames belong in the request with a photo. The company confirms the cause on site.

Glass and the barrier screen

The glass front gets hot enough to burn. The standard for vented gas fireplace heaters (ANSI Z21.88/CSA 2.33) took effect in revised form on 11 September 2015, according to the testing body Intertek. It added protective barrier requirements, caps the surface temperature of the viewing glass or a glass barrier at 78 °C (172 °F) in testing, and says a damaged barrier is replaced with the maker’s barrier. Older units may have none; with small children at home, ask what fits your model.

Enbridge Gas says a fireplace with cracked glass stays off until a TSSA-registered contractor inspects or replaces it. Glass and gaskets are model-specific, one more reason to send the rating plate.

Vents, chimneys and CO in an Ottawa winter

Enbridge Gas advises a yearly chimney inspection by a TSSA-registered contractor. Ontario’s carbon monoxide page asks homeowners to keep outside vents and chimneys clear of snow and debris; photograph a wall vent cap behind a snowbank.

A home with a fireplace needs a CO alarm next to each sleeping area, and since 1 January 2026 one on every storey. The carbon monoxide page covers what to do when one sounds. A gas appliance found unsafe on a visit can be tagged and shut off, a fireplace included; see what a red tag means.

Repair, replace or convert

One firm’s Ontario guide suggests weighing replacement at an age of 15 to 20, or when the repair passes half the price of a new unit. HomeStars lists fireplace installation in Ottawa at $1,000–$3,500 for the connection and venting. For an old wood fireplace, another firm’s guide puts a direct-vent gas insert at $2,500–$6,000+ installed, with the liner at $300–$800 and a new gas line at $200–$600 inside that total.

The quote should name the unit, vent type and route, gas line work, old unit removal, barrier screen, finishing and HST. Ask whether a permit applies.

Who may work on it, and what to sign

TSSA says registered fuels contractors are the only businesses legally authorized to do fuels work in Ontario. Its online registry, updated monthly, checks a company by name or number and filters for natural gas, propane or chimney liners. Ask for the number on the call.

Ontario requires a written agreement for home work over $50. An estimate in it can be exceeded by 10% at most unless you sign a change to the contract, and if you sign at home you get a 10-day cooling-off period.

Who handles your request

Ottawa Heating Desk sends your request to one independent local company that works on gas appliances. That company calls you back, books the visit, prices the fireplace work and does it.

Questions to ask the company

  1. What does your yearly service include, item by item, and do I get a written condition report?
  2. Will you test gas pressure and the safety devices, and check the vent outside the house?
  3. Is the repair price for parts and labour, and is the trip charge credited?
  4. If the glass or barrier screen needs replacing, will it be the maker's part for this model?
  5. What is your TSSA registration number, and can I see the total with HST in writing first?

Have this ready for the call

  • The make and model from the rating plate, often behind the lower grille
  • A photo of the fireplace, and one of the outside vent cap or chimney top
  • What it does: pilot out, pilot lit but no flame, flame drops out, sooty glass, fan noise, remote dead
  • Natural gas or propane; built-in unit, insert or freestanding stove
  • Clear access in front of the unit, with furniture, mantel decor and the TV moved back

Questions people ask

How often should a gas fireplace be serviced?

Once a year. Enbridge Gas advises a yearly visit from a TSSA-registered contractor, and HomeStars notes most makers recommend an annual inspection and cleaning. One Ottawa firm suggests early fall.

Can the furnace company that services my furnace also do the fireplace?

Often, if it is a TSSA-registered fuels contractor for your fuel; the TSSA registry shows that. Mention both in one request and ask for each on its own line.

The glass on my fireplace is cracked. Can I keep using it?

Enbridge Gas says to stop using it and have the glass inspected or replaced by a TSSA-registered contractor. Put a photo of the crack in your request.

What is the mesh screen in front of the glass for?

It guards against burns from hot glass. A damaged screen is to be replaced with the maker’s barrier for that model; ask the company to order the right part.

My fireplace is old. When does a new unit make more sense than a repair?

One firm’s Ontario guide points to a unit aged 15 to 20, or a repair above half the price of a new unit. Ask for both prices.
