In short
- HomeStars' Ottawa guide puts AC repairs at $100–$3,500 and HVAC labour at $75–$150 an hour, about $110 on average.
- On Canada-wide guides, a call-out fee is $75–$150 and a capacitor replacement $150–$400, mostly visit and labour.
- A compressor outside the maker's warranty runs $1,700–$3,300; a new central air system in Ottawa, $3,000–$7,500 installed.
- HomeStars' rule of thumb: once a repair passes half the price of a new installed system, replacement usually wins.

Ottawa figures first, then the parts
HomeStars publishes one Ottawa guide for heating and cooling. It gives broad city bands: AC repairs $100–$3,500, compressor or capacitor work $400–$2,000 and up, a new central system $3,000–$7,500 installed. Part-level prices sit in its Canada-wide guides, used below and labelled.
The Ottawa guide adds that travel time and distance within the region can raise the hourly rate, and that after-hours calls cost more per hour. It advises asking about extra fees or a minimum service duration before booking.
What the first visit costs
Most bills open with a flat fee for the trip and the diagnosis, then add time and parts. Canada-wide figures:
- Call-out or diagnostic fee: $75–$150.
- Hourly labour after that: $75–$150.
- After-hours or emergency labour: $150–$250 an hour.
- Rural travel surcharge: some contractors add $50–$100.
If a yearly tune-up ($100–$200) finds a weak capacitor or contactor, parts and labour add $100–$300. HomeStars calls a failed capacitor one of the most common reasons a unit stops cooling in summer, and one of the most affordable fixes. The AC repair page goes through those parts one by one.
A price ladder, cheapest fault to dearest
“Part only” means labour comes on top. HomeStars notes that parts bought through the technician carry a markup over retail, which is standard.
| Fault or job | Canada-wide range |
|---|---|
| Contactor, part only | $15–$75 |
| Run capacitor, replaced | $150–$300 |
| Dual-run capacitor, replaced | $200–$400 |
| Condenser fan motor, part only | $100–$350 |
| Coil cleaning | $150–$400 |
| Leak detection | $100–$300 |
| R-410A refrigerant, per pound | $50–$100 |
| Compressor, under warranty | $800–$1,600 |
| Compressor, out of warranty | $1,700–$3,300 |
Two HomeStars guides disagree on the compressor: one gives $1,300–$2,500, the other the figures above. Symptoms that point to each part are on the AC not cooling page.
Refrigerant: two lines on the bill
Ontario’s O. Reg. 463/10 counts home air conditioners and heat pumps as refrigeration equipment. Only a person certified under it may service or test the refrigerant side, and a refill needs a leak-test notice on the unit, at most six months old, showing no leaks.
So a low charge usually means two lines: finding the leak and the refrigerant by the pound. HomeStars warns that a top-up without locating the source tends to need another recharge within a season or two. On an R-22 system a recharge runs $400–$800, and the guide sees a new system on current refrigerant as the cheaper path.
Compressor maths: when repair stops paying
HomeStars splits an out-of-warranty compressor job: the compressor $800–$3,300, labour $700–$1,000, a refill $130–$790, a filter dryer $150–$400, and electrical repairs $150–$800 when needed.
Apply the 50% rule to these numbers. Half of the low Ottawa figure for a new system is $1,500, and the bottom of the Canada-wide out-of-warranty compressor range, $1,700, already sits above it. Repair still wins when the unit is young and under warranty, or when the fault is a cheap part. HomeStars calls units under ten almost always worth servicing.
What a replacement quote adds up to
The Canada-wide fitting guide gives $3,500–$7,000 on existing ductwork and $5,500–$8,500 for a 3- to 4-ton unit in a 2,000–3,000 sq ft house. Labour is 40% to 60% of most quotes. Lines that move the total:
- The unit: single-stage $2,000–$4,500; high-efficiency variable-speed $4,000–$6,500.
- Electrical: circuit or panel work $500–$2,000. In Ontario, only a Licensed Electrical Contractor may be hired for it, and ESA says that contractor can request the notification.
- Old unit removal: about $300 in Ottawa, often left out of the install price.
Federal rules set a floor: a standard split central unit manufactured on or after 1 January 2023 has to rate SEER2 13.4 or higher. The City of Ottawa lists installing an air conditioning unit among projects that need no building permit, outside designated heritage buildings and Heritage District Overlays. Sizing and coil matching are on the AC installation page.
Timing, the repair visit and the paper
HomeStars names April to early June, and autumn, as the easier months to book an install, when contractors have more room to schedule and may bargain on price.
Ontario restricts selling air conditioners at your home. A business on a repair visit may offer you a new unit there only if it already has a contract with you, asked in advance whether it could make that offer, and you agreed. If you invite a seller in and sign, you get a 10-day cooling-off period from the day you receive the written agreement. Ask for parts, labour, refrigerant pounds and HST on separate lines.
How your request is handled
Ottawa Heating Desk passes your request to one independent Ottawa heating and cooling company. That company calls you back, inspects the air conditioner, quotes the repair or the replacement and does the work.
Questions people ask
Why is a capacitor bill so much higher than the part?
HomeStars prices run capacitors at $10–$30 as parts and dual-run ones at $20–$50. The service call and labour make up 60% to 80% of a $150–$400 replacement, and the swap takes 30 to 60 minutes.
How much does a refrigerant recharge cost?
A Canada-wide guide prices R-410A at $50–$100 a pound and R-22 at $100–$200 or more, with an R-22 recharge at $400–$800. Leak detection at $100–$300 usually comes first.
My central air is fourteen years old and needs a compressor. Repair or replace?
An out-of-warranty compressor runs $1,700–$3,300; a new central system in Ottawa, $3,000–$7,500 installed. HomeStars suggests replacing once a repair passes half the price of a new system, and expects other parts to follow on units past fifteen.
What does an after-hours call add?
On Canada-wide guides, after-hours labour runs $150–$250 an hour. For a capacitor, an evening or weekend visit adds $100–$200 over a scheduled one.
Can the final bill be higher than the quote?
Ontario’s guide for home renovation businesses says any contract worth more than $50 needs a written agreement. If it includes an estimate, the business cannot charge more than 10% above it unless you ask for extra or different work and a change to the contract is signed.
