Where these answers come from

Prices come from HomeStars’ Ottawa guides and its Canada-wide guides, marked as such. Rules come from TSSA, Enbridge Gas, Ontario, the City of Ottawa and Tarion, all opened on 29.10.2026. Your own figure comes from the company that sees the equipment; the furnace repair cost guide shows how each bill line is built.

Four lines that speed up the callback

Name the fuel: natural gas, propane, oil or electric. Give the equipment’s age from the rating label and the fault in plain words, with when it started. Add owner, tenant or condo, and who signs off on the work. A photo of the label and any blinking code helps the company bring the right part.

Questions people ask

What should I budget for a furnace repair in Ottawa?

HomeStars’ Ottawa HVAC guide spans $100–$7,000, so the part decides where yours lands. The Canada-wide guide splits a bill into diagnostic fee, part and labour, with most straightforward repairs taking one to two hours.

Is there a charge just for the technician to come out?

Usually. The Canada-wide guide lists a diagnostic or service call at $80–$150, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. Confirm the credit in writing when you book.

The furnace quit at 9 pm. Does waiting until morning save money?

Often. The Canada-wide guide says after-hours calls add $100–$200 or more to the base bill, and waiting for business hours helps when there is no safety risk. A gas smell or a CO alarm puts safety calls first.

At what age does a new furnace beat another repair?

The Canada-wide guide calls a furnace younger than ten almost always worth repairing for one failed part. Between ten and fifteen it applies a 50% test against a comparable new system; past fifteen the bar drops. Replacement runs $4,000–$7,500 installed on the HomeStars replacement guide.

How can I tell whether a company may touch my gas furnace?

TSSA says Ontario law requires furnaces and fuel-fired appliances to be maintained by TSSA-registered contractors who hire TSSA-certified gas technicians. It urges checking a contractor’s registration with its online lookup before any work. Ask for the registration number on the first call.

The basement smells of rotten eggs. Who comes first?

Enbridge Gas. Its page says gas is given a sulphur or rotten-egg smell, and that you should leave the area at once and call 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from a safe location. A heating request comes after the gas side is made safe.

How many CO alarms does an Ottawa house need now?

If the house has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage, Ontario requires an alarm next to each sleeping area. Since 1 January 2026 the rule adds one on every storey, including storeys with no bedrooms.

The CO alarm went off. Is that a heating company call?

Later. Ontario says to get everyone out at once and call 9-1-1 from outside the building. Once responders clear the house, book a registered contractor to check the furnace, water heater and any fireplace.

A tag on the furnace says A or B. What does each mean?

On Enbridge’s page, an A violation is an immediate hazard and the gas to the appliance or building is shut off at once. A B violation allows up to 42 days to repair or replace, after which the gas is shut off. A TSSA-registered contractor does the fix and reports it to Enbridge.

The repair technician offered a new furnace. Can I sign today?

Ontario bars a business doing repairs or maintenance at your home from entering a new agreement for a furnace or air conditioner during that visit. The exception needs all three: an existing contract, a request made in advance, and your agreement to it.

A salesperson knocked and offered a furnace or duct cleaning. What are my rights?

They can be sold at home only if you started the contact, with narrow exceptions for existing contracts. A contract from unsolicited door-to-door marketing is void: you keep the goods with no obligation, and the business pays any removal or return charges.

Our house came with a rented furnace and a notice on the title. Does it still count?

Since 6 June 2024 Ontario bans notices of security interest for furnaces, water heaters and AC equipment and deems existing ones expired. They may still show on title; the land is unaffected. The rental contract stays in force.

Does central air or a heat pump need a City of Ottawa permit?

The City lists installing air conditioning units or heat pumps among projects that need no building permit. The work must still meet the Ontario Building Code and the Zoning By-law. Designated heritage buildings and the Heritage District Overlay get no exemption.

Which heat pump rebate can an Ottawa owner apply for today?

Home Renovation Savings offers up to $12,000 for heat pumps, with no energy assessment. The owner applies and a participating contractor files for pre-approval; installs done before approval lose the rebate.

Our new build had its first winter and the heat keeps failing. Who pays?

Tarion’s two-year warranty covers heating defects from the date of possession, so write to the builder first. For a heat pump rebate, Home Renovation Savings excludes homes occupied six months or less.

Can the AC or heat pump simply get more refrigerant?

Ontario’s O. Reg. 463/10 lets a certified person refill the equipment only when a notice on it, at most six months old, shows no leaks and the unit has no apparent damage. A leak test comes before a top-up.

Our rental unit is cold. What does the City require?

Ottawa’s Heat By-law applies to rentals heated by or at the expense of the landlord. Rooms must hold at least 20°C from 6 am to 11 pm and 16.67°C overnight, measured at the centre of the room. Add the landlord’s contact to any request.
