What to ask before you book
- Q1What is your diagnostic fee, and does it come off the repair bill if I go ahead?
- Q2What is your company's TSSA registration number, and the name and certificate number of the technician coming?
- Q3Is the part on the truck, or does it need ordering, and what keeps the house warm meanwhile?
- Q4Do you charge more for an evening or weekend visit, and how much?
- Q5Can I have the part, the labour and the HST in writing before you start?
Before the visit
- What the furnace does: no heat, cold air from the vents, starts and stops, a new noise, a smell
- Since when, and whether anything changed: a power cut, a new thermostat, renovation dust
- Gas, electric or oil, and the furnace's age if you know it
- A photo of the label on the furnace, if you can see it without removing a panel
- A clear path to the furnace and room to work around it
Describe the furnace the way a technician reads it
Three lines tell the technician most of the job before the visit:
- What it does. “Runs, but the vents blow cold air.” “Starts, shuts off after a minute, starts again.” “Silent, and the thermostat screen is blank.”
- What it is. Gas, electric or oil. Age if you know it, or a photo of the label on the outside of the cabinet.
- What changed. A power cut last night, a new smart thermostat, drywall dust from a basement job.
Pick Today, This week or Flexible on the form. A house with no heat in cold weather is a Today call; a furnace that runs but makes a new noise can wait for a booked slot.
The jobs, page by page
- AC repair: central air and ductless units, what the outdoor unit can tell the technician, and the City’s permit list.
- Heat pump: cold-climate units, the Home Renovation Savings rebates and the City loan.
- Furnace replacement: what a new furnace costs and Ontario’s rules on contracts signed at home.
- Duct cleaning: per-vent pricing, what a full cleaning covers and door-to-door offers.

What sets the price
Most furnace repairs come down to one part plus labour. A Canada-wide HomeStars guide lists a diagnostic call at $80–$150, often credited toward the repair, and most single-part repairs at $200–$600 during business hours. After-hours calls add $100–$200 or more on the same guide.
In Ottawa, HomeStars puts HVAC labour at $75–$150 an hour. The part itself drives the rest: a flame sensor runs $75–$200 on the Canada-wide guide, a control board $400–$900 and heat exchanger work $500–$1,500 or more. Ask on the call for the diagnostic fee and the after-hours policy, and get the repair price before work starts.
Gas work and the TSSA
Under Ontario law, furnaces and other fuel-fired appliances are maintained by contractors registered with the Technical Standards and Safety Authority. Those contractors must employ TSSA-certified gas technicians. The province’s fuels certificate regulation lets a G.2 holder install, repair and service gas appliances up to 400,000 Btuh, and a G.3 works under a G.1, G.2 or DA holder’s supervision.
TSSA has a lookup tool on its website for checking a contractor’s registration. Ask for the company’s registration number and the technician’s name and certificate number, and check them before the visit.
Gas smell or a CO alarm
A gas smell is an Enbridge call: leave the house and call 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from a safe place. A sounding carbon monoxide alarm means everyone out and 9-1-1 from outside. Send the work order after the house is cleared.
The Ontario Fire Code requires a CO alarm next to each sleeping area of a house that has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage. Since 1 January 2026 it also requires one on every storey.

Questions
01What does furnace repair cost in Ottawa?
The HomeStars Ottawa guide puts furnace repairs at $100–$7,000. A single part usually lands well below the top: a Canada-wide guide lists an ignitor at $150–$300 and a control board at $400–$900. The company that calls you prices your job after it sees the furnace.
02How do I check that the technician is allowed to work on my gas furnace?
TSSA has a lookup tool on its website to check a contractor’s registration. Ask the company for its TSSA registration number and the technician’s certificate number. Under Ontario’s fuels certificate rules, a G.2 holder may install, repair and service gas appliances up to 400,000 Btuh.
03I smell gas near the furnace. Should I send a request?
Leave first. Enbridge Gas says to leave the area at once and call 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from a safe place. Send the work order once Enbridge or the fire service has made the house safe.
04The carbon monoxide alarm went off. What now?
Ontario’s guidance is to get everyone out of the home and call 9-1-1 from outside the building. After the all-clear, send a request and say the alarm went off and when.
05Can you also look at the AC or a heat pump?
Yes. Pick the matching service on the form, or send one request for both and ask on the call whether the company covers each.
