Furnace short cycling: count the starts, then describe the pattern

A furnace that fires and stops every few minutes wears its parts and leaves rooms uneven. Time a few cycles, note what the burners and fan do, and one independent Ottawa heating company gets your request and calls you.

In short

  • Resideo's Honeywell page says a typical mid-efficiency forced-air furnace cycles about five times an hour under typical load; a high-efficiency one, less.
  • Carrier lists a clogged filter, an oversized furnace and a faulty or badly placed thermostat among the causes.
  • In Ottawa, HomeStars puts HVAC labour at $75–$150 an hour; a diagnostic visit runs $80–$150 Canada-wide, often credited to the repair.
  • Enbridge Gas warns that plugged outdoor exhaust vents can let carbon monoxide build up indoors.

Count the cycles before you call

Carrier describes short cycling as a furnace turning on and off within a few minutes without finishing a full heating cycle. People notice rooms that swing from warm to cool, repeated clicking, a bigger gas bill.

A count gives the company something to work with. Resideo’s page says a typical mid-efficiency furnace cycles about five times an hour under typical load, a high-efficiency one less. Load means the weather. Time three or four cycles with a phone, write minutes on and off, and add the outdoor temperature. Ten starts an hour on a cold night and ten on a mild afternoon are different reports.

Four patterns and where they point

What the furnace does as it stops tells the technician where to look first.

  • Warm air for a few minutes, burners stop, fan keeps blowing. Carrier links this to overheating: a clogged filter or covered registers starve the heat exchanger of air and the high-limit switch shuts the burners off. Say when the filter was last changed.
  • Thermostat that seems to read the wrong temperature. Carrier names a faulty thermostat or one placed too close to a heating source.
  • Short runs in a furnace that may be too large for the house. Carrier lists an oversized furnace: it heats the space quickly and shuts off.
  • An oil furnace that starts and stops. Carrier adds a clogged oil filter or burner tip and a dirty photo cell.

If the furnace runs but the air stays cool, see furnace blowing cold air.

The thermostat: setting and spot

Many programmable thermostats have an installer setting for cycles per hour, and Resideo says the installer can adjust it. If the thermostat or the furnace was replaced recently, give the brand and model of each in your request. A supply register below the thermostat, a fireplace or afternoon sun can warm it early. Moving or replacing it is its own job; see thermostat installation.

Snow on the outdoor vent pipes

A furnace that vents through an outside wall can have its pipes covered by snow. Enbridge Gas asks customers to keep furnace, fireplace, water heater and dryer exhaust outlets clear, warning that plugged vents can let carbon monoxide build up. Its advice: clear snow gently with a brush or broom, keep shovelled or blown snow away from the pipe, and call 1-866-763-5427 if ice will not come off. Ontario’s Fire Code has required a CO alarm on every storey of a home with a fuel-burning appliance since 1 January 2026. See carbon monoxide safety.

A furnace too big for the house

Carrier says correct sizing prevents short cycling and that a professional should determine it. If the fix is a new furnace, the Canada-wide HomeStars guide puts replacement at $4,000–$7,500 installed. Ask how the size was worked out for your house today. Ontario restricts selling furnaces at the door: a contract from an unsolicited visit is void, and one signed at home after you invited the company has a 10-day cooling-off period.

What the quote should list

The cause found, each part, labour, the diagnostic fee and whether it is credited, any after-hours charge, and HST. HomeStars notes that warranty terms differ between companies, so ask for them on the invoice. In Ontario, a contract over $50 needs a written agreement, and an estimate can be exceeded by 10% at most unless you sign a change. Fuller figures: furnace repair cost in Ottawa.

Under Ontario law, furnaces must be maintained by TSSA-registered contractors who hire TSSA-certified gas technicians. TSSA’s online lookup shows registration; TSSA says a listing is no endorsement.

Who handles your request

Ottawa Heating Desk passes your request to one independent local heating company. That company calls you back, finds out why the furnace keeps stopping and does the repair.

Questions to ask the company

  1. What caused the short cycling, and what test confirmed it?
  2. After the repair, will you watch a few full cycles and tell me the run time?
  3. Is the diagnostic fee credited if I go ahead?
  4. If the furnace is too large, how did you work out the right size?
  5. Can I have parts, labour, any after-hours charge and HST in writing first?

Have this ready for the call

  • Minutes on and off for three or four cycles, with the outdoor temperature
  • What happens at each stop: burners out, fan still blowing, a click, a blinking light
  • Make, model and age from the label inside the furnace door, and any fault code
  • When the filter was last changed
  • Where the thermostat sits and what is near it: a register, fireplace, lamp or sunny window

Questions people ask

How many times an hour should a furnace come on?

Resideo’s Honeywell page gives about five cycles an hour for a typical mid-efficiency forced-air furnace under typical load, fewer for a high-efficiency one. The count changes with the weather, so note the outdoor temperature.

The furnace is two winters old and short cycles. Who do I call first?

The installer. Carrier names an oversized furnace as one cause, and Honeywell says the installer can adjust the thermostat’s cycle rate. Both point back to the installation, so keep the contract at hand.

Does an oil furnace short cycle for other reasons?

Carrier’s oil list adds a clogged oil filter or burner tip and a dirty photo cell. Say in your request that the house heats with oil.

Can I keep running it until the visit?

Carrier says short cycling adds wear and can damage parts, so book soon. If the CO alarm sounds, Ontario’s advice is to get everyone out and call 9-1-1 from outside. For a gas smell, Enbridge says leave and call 1-866-763-5427 or 911.

Repair or replace an older furnace?

HomeStars says furnaces past the 15-year mark can have limited parts availability, and near the 20-year mark it is fair to ask whether a repair pays. Ask for both prices in writing.
