What to ask before you book
- Q1Is the price for finding the fault, or for the fault and the fix?
- Q2If the system needs refrigerant, how much does each pound or kilogram cost, and will you find the leak first?
- Q3Can the part be ordered now and fitted before spring?
- Q4If you look at the furnace on the same visit, is that a separate charge?
- Q5Will I get the price, the part and the HST in writing before you start?
Before the visit
- Type of system: central air on the furnace, ductless wall unit, or a ducted heat pump
- What happened before it quit: warm air from the vents, ice on the copper lines, water by the furnace, a hum from the outdoor unit
- A photo of the label on the outdoor unit, and of the indoor head for a ductless system
- Age of the system, if you know it
- A clear path to the outdoor unit: snow, a fence gate, a locked side yard
What kind of AC, and what it did
Three common systems, and each brings a different visit:
- Central air. An outdoor condenser linked by copper lines to a coil sitting on the furnace. It uses the furnace fan and the ducts to move cold air.
- Ductless mini-split. An outdoor unit and one or more wall heads, each with its own controls.
- Ducted heat pump. Looks like central air outside, and heats as well as cools. See the heat pump page.
Say which one you have, then describe the last thing it did: warm air from the vents, ice on the lines, water pooling by the furnace, the outdoor fan still while the unit hums. A photo of the outdoor unit’s label gives the technician the model and the refrigerant type before the visit.
What drives the bill
On the HomeStars Ottawa guide, AC repairs run $100–$3,500, and compressor or capacitor work $400–$2,000 and up. A Canada-wide guide puts coil cleaning at $150–$550 and a new evaporator coil at $900–$1,700.
Where a job falls in that spread depends on three things: the part, whether the system needs refrigerant and a leak search, and access. A rooftop or second-floor balcony unit, or a ductless head high on a wall, takes more labour than a condenser on a pad at ground level.
Repair now or replace in spring
Heating season is starting, so the AC sits idle until next summer. That gives time for a second quote on a large repair. The Ottawa guide lists a new central air system at $3,000–$7,500 installed; put that next to the repair price before you approve a compressor job.
The City of Ottawa lists installing air conditioning units or heat pumps among projects exempt from a building permit. Designated heritage buildings, and buildings in a Heritage District Overlay, are outside the exemption. The work still has to comply with the Ontario Building Code and the Zoning By-law.
Offers at the door
Since 1 March 2018, Ontario restricts selling air conditioners, furnaces, air cleaners, water heaters and duct cleaning at a consumer’s home unless the consumer invited the business. When you do invite one and sign at home, the contract must carry a signed cover page on your rights, and you have 10 days to cancel after you receive your written copy.
Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Heating Desk is a request service. One independent Ottawa heating and cooling company receives your work order, calls you, prices the AC repair and does it.
Questions
01My AC stopped in August. Is it worth booking now, with summer over?
Autumn gives time to get a diagnosis, compare a quote and wait for a part. In a house with a furnace and central air, the technician can also look at the furnace while there, if you ask for both in the work order.
02What does AC repair cost in Ottawa?
The HomeStars Ottawa guide shows $100–$3,500 for AC repairs and $400–$2,000 and up for compressor or capacitor work. The company that calls you prices your unit after it sees it.
03Do I need a City permit to replace the outdoor unit?
The City of Ottawa lists installing air conditioning units or heat pumps as work exempt from a building permit. The exemption excludes designated heritage buildings and properties in a Heritage District Overlay; for those, the City asks you to contact a Building Client Service Centre representative.
04Someone knocked on my door offering a new air conditioner. Is that allowed?
Ontario restricts selling air conditioners, furnaces, water heaters and duct cleaning at a consumer’s home unless the consumer started the contact. A contract signed after an unsolicited visit is void, and the province says the consumer can keep the goods with no obligation.
