Three numbers on every furnace repair invoice

HomeStars breaks a furnace repair into three charges: the visit, the part and the labour. On small jobs the visit and labour make up most of the bill; on larger jobs the part does.

  • The visit. A diagnostic or service call runs $80–$150 on the Canada-wide guide, often credited if you go ahead.
  • The labour. HomeStars’ Ottawa guide puts HVAC labour at $75–$150 an hour, about $110 on average. Urgency, the complexity of the fault and travel time inside the Ottawa region move the rate, so ask about a minimum billed time when you book.
  • The part. This is where the gap between a $150 bill and a $900 bill opens up.

Gas furnace parts, from cheapest to dearest

HomeStars says gas furnaces are the more common kind in Canada and generally cost more to repair than electric ones. Its Canada-wide figures, part and labour together:

  • Flame sensor: $75–$200. The part itself costs $20–$100, with $80–$150 of labour on top.
  • Ignitor: $150–$300.
  • Blower motor: $300–$650, with more of the cabinet taken apart.
  • Gas valve: $300–$700.
  • Control board: $400–$900. The board alone often costs $200–$600 before labour.
  • Heat exchanger: $500–$1,500 or more. HomeStars says most pros recommend replacing the furnace once a crack is found, because a cracked exchanger is a carbon monoxide risk.

A draft inducer motor or gas valve job can reach $700–$1,500 or more in total. The furnace noises page matches sounds to these parts.

Electric furnaces and condo units

Electric furnaces are more common in condos and generally cheaper to fix. The Canada-wide guide lists a heating element at $150–$400, a sequencer at $150–$350, and a limit switch or capacitor at $100–$250 each. HomeStars ties one cold zone or a tripping breaker to an element or sequencer.

When you call changes what you pay

The same fault costs more at 11 p.m. in January than on a Tuesday morning in October. HomeStars puts the after-hours surcharge at $100–$200 or more, and some companies switch to a premium hourly rate for evenings and weekends. HomeStars says that when the furnace has stopped heating but there is no safety risk, waiting for regular hours keeps the total down. A house with no heat in a cold snap belongs on the no heat page.

Parts set the timing too. A flame sensor, ignitor or capacitor job takes one to two hours on the Canada-wide guide; a blower motor or control board two to four. When the part has to be ordered, expect a second visit one to five business days later. HomeStars says furnaces older than about fifteen years can have limited parts, especially discontinued models.

Repair or replace: the age and the 50% test

HomeStars sets out a simple rule of thumb. A furnace under ten years old is almost always worth repairing for a single failed part. Between ten and fifteen years, price a replacement once a repair would cost more than half of a comparable new system. Past fifteen, that threshold drops. A furnace that already needed one large repair in the past two seasons changes the sum again.

For scale, the Canada-wide replacement guide puts a new furnace, installed, at $4,000–$7,500. Two failures lean toward replacement at any age: a cracked heat exchanger, where the part alone is $500–$1,200, and a $400–$600 control board for a discontinued model with other parts near the end. The furnace replacement cost guide covers the other side of that sum.

Ontario has a rule for this moment. During a repair or maintenance visit, a business may sign you to a new furnace contract only if it already has a contract with you, asked in advance whether it could make the offer, and you agreed.

What the written quote should show

Ontario’s guide for home renovation businesses says any contract worth more than $50 needs a written agreement. Once an estimate is in the contract, the final bill can be at most 10% higher unless you ask for extra or different work and both sides sign a change. A repair quote worth signing lists:

  • the fault found and the part, with its make or model number;
  • the visit fee, and whether it is credited;
  • labour as hours or a flat price, and any after-hours rate;
  • a second visit if the part has to be ordered;
  • the parts and labour warranty terms;
  • HST, which is 13% in Ontario per the Canada Revenue Agency.

HomeStars says most furnace repairs need no permit, while some gas line or combustion work may need one at $75–$200; the company should say so and include it.

On a gas furnace, TSSA says only registered fuels contractors may legally do fuels work in Ontario; its online registry finds a company by name or number.

Who handles your request

Ottawa Heating Desk passes your request to one independent local heating company. That company calls you back, looks at the furnace, prices the repair and does the work; the price and the warranty are agreed between you and that company.

Questions people ask

Why is the Ottawa range for furnace repair so wide?

HomeStars’ Ottawa guide puts furnace repairs at $100–$7,000 because the range covers everything from a quick part swap to major work on an old system. Single parts sit far lower: the Canada-wide guide lists most of them between $75 and $900.

Is the diagnostic fee charged on top of the repair?

Sometimes. HomeStars puts the visit at $80–$150 and says many companies credit it toward the repair if you go ahead. Ask when you book and have the answer written on the invoice.

How much more does a night or weekend call cost?

The Canada-wide guide says after-hours surcharges typically add $100–$200 to the base bill, and some companies also charge a higher hourly rate for evening or weekend work. On a small repair, that can nearly double the total.

How long is a furnace repair warranty?

HomeStars says most companies give 90 days to one year on parts and a shorter labour warranty, often 30 to 90 days. Terms vary a lot, so ask before the work starts and keep them on the invoice.

Should I get a second quote?

HomeStars suggests a second opinion before approving anything over $300, such as a blower motor, control board or gas valve. It costs another visit fee and can save several hundred dollars if the first diagnosis or price is off.
